George Harrison – My Favorite Songs

“I wanted to be successful, not famous.” – George Harrison

These blog will be covering my Favorite songs from one of my favorite artists – George Harrison, it will be covering songs from his days in the Beatles.

Though these will have numbers they are in random order :-

1) If I Needed Someone – a song structured around the D chord, as many song’s of the time. George said he was inspired from The Byrd’s songs and guitar work at the time. The song is mid-tempo level semi-ballad with lyrics reflecting the singers aloofness to love and relationships at the moment, and though he isn’t reluctant to tell the girl if she wants him, she has to wait for him. Fun fact : this is the only song written by George Harrison that was performed live by the Beatles.
2) You Like Me Too Much – A fun song with even funnier lyrics which could be seen as progressive for the time. It has a memorable piano line which pops across the songs, even the lyrics are playful where at one line “You’ll never leave me and you know it’s true Cos you like me too much and I like you” but it’s refuted with such lines like “I will follow you and bring you back where you belong Cos I could’t really stand it I admit that I was wrong I wouldn’t let you leave me cos it’s true Cos you like me too much and I like you”. This song was the 3rd song used of George on an Beatles Album.
3) Within You & Without You – this song is one of the most deep cuts on the Sgt pepper album, with lyrics reflecting his thoughts on Humanity and the perceiving of souls, the song is accompanied by Indian instruments and ragas. The lyrics reflect on the insecurity of an individual who thinks only his/her problems are significant than others, which George sums up with the lines “Life goes on Within you and Without you”
4) While My Guitar Gently Weeps – A rocker of a song with an rocking of a personality playing guitar on it. Eric Clapton participated in the recording of this track. On the song, he visits the theme of universal love. ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ is a simple song. With a basic structure built around two verses in A minor and a bridge in A major, followed by an outro where the lead vocals drop and Harrison leaves us with just the guitar by itself. There are many great versions of this song, like the live version or the acoustic version and the original which still holds up today.
5) Something – If you put a gun to my head and asked me to answer my favorite song in under 5 seconds then it would be this song. With simple but effective drumline, complex but melodic baseline and killer guitar playing from George elevates this song to a whole new level. The lyrics portray a simple love song but it does add other elements such as confusion with lines like “You’re asking me, will my grow, I don’t know”

These were my Favorite songs by Beatle George
